Johnny Cash wrote “When the Man Comes Around” because Queen Elizabeth II appeared to him in a dream and told him he was a thorn tree in a whirlwind.

He woke up, looked it up, found it in the Book of Job, and spent the next however long writing thirty-three verses of apocalyptic poetry that became the title track of his final album. That’s just who Johnny Cash was. The man dreamed in scripture and painted with thunder.

The Man doesn’t try to capture Johnny Cash the icon — the mug shots, the Folsom Prison swagger, the finger. Andy Carlson painted a different moment: Cash alone with his guitar, head down, the weight of something enormous in the room with him. The kind of quiet that exists right before a man opens his mouth and says something that changes the air. Around him, rendered in the dark, the lyrics of “When the Man Comes Around” float in and out of visibility — fragments of Revelation, judgment, Alpha and Omega, angels singing — written into the background like scripture on a wall that most people walk past without reading.

Then you turn on a blacklight, and everything changes.

Under UV light, the painting transforms. The lyrics ignite. The neon glows hotter. What was whispered becomes proclaimed. It’s the same trick the song pulls — quiet and devastating until suddenly it isn’t, until the thunder arrives and the hair on your arm stands up and you realize you’ve been in the presence of something serious this whole time.

This one is personal. Andy’s sons carry names inspired by the Man in Black — a legacy passed down not in bloodline but in the music that shaped who their father became. The Man is a tribute to that lineage. To the artists who don’t sanitize the grit, who stand on the porch and watch the storm roll in and pick up a guitar anyway.
